In a traditional espresso setup where the coffee puck itself provides the extraction resistance (what we call Configuration 1 on the S01A-9BAR), the operational window between a fast flow and a complete system choke is razor-thin. Note: S01A-9Bar, Configuration 2 setup has the downstream flow resistance control and it is not used in this current extraction.
Yesterday, a routine morning extraction perfectly illustrated this exponential physics trap.
The Baseline
- Grind Size: 34 clicks
- Result: A fast, under-resisted extraction landing near 6 bars of pressure.
To bring the pressure up into the ideal zone, a tiny micro-adjustment was made for the next shot: tightening the grind by just 2 clicks (down to 32). However, a small real-world variable crept in—literally adding just a few extra stray beans left over in the jar to the dose.
The Compounding Effect
Logically, a human thinks: A slightly finer grind plus a tiny bit more coffee should equal a slightly firmer pull.
Fluid dynamics thinks otherwise. The result wasn't a gentle step up to 9 bars; it was an immediate, exponential spike that surged past 12+ bars, pushing the manual lever, or the piston, to the absolute edge of a total system choke. Still it is extracted.

The Engineering Takeaway
On the puck resistance, when you rely solely on a compressed bed of coffee particles to act as your hydraulic brake pad, you are dealing with highly non-linear variables. Tightening the grind decreases particle geometry, while adding extra beans increases bed depth and eliminates headspace. Together, these two minor changes compound to completely seal the water channels.
This is the classic "home barista trap." It proves why manual espresso can feel incredibly unpredictable to the casual user—and exactly why isolating pressure mechanics from the whims of a few coffee beans is a fundamental engineering necessity.
